Valiant Hearts Coming Home delves into Freddies brothers story, James, from his time on the field at the start of deployment through his end in the First World War, and highlights many black soldiers struggles within the U.S. Along with facing the rigors of World War I, Freddies brother James and other Black soldiers in his unit struggled with the everyday bigotry they encountered from fellow soldiers both home and overseas. What makes the story of Freddy the most harrowing of any of the characters is what happens in the aftermath of World War One.
